It is not generally known that 9 of 20 trucks are empty on their return trip, after they have delivered their goods on the forward journey.
The freight for the forward journey is priced to pay for the vehicle to drive both ways, so any further last minute backload freight (freight on the return journey) is profitable for the truck.
In reality this means that pricing for the return load last minute can be discounted if it suits the carrier.
We stumbled across the backload solution after buying an old haybaler in Amberly on TradeMe, and organised the freight to get it home to Wanaka. After calling several freight companies, We came to the conclusion that the freight was going to be nearly as much as the baler.
The light bulb moment came when we called a local truck driver, and he suggested he could collect it on a backload basis and would charge about half what the other companies had quoted. The savings worked for us, and the additional profit for the backload worked for the truck driver.
This win-win outcome has formed the basis of the GoBackload site, and we all hope that you have the same positive outcome from your next freight experience.
